SOS Children’s Village (SOS CV) Bambous is located in the District of Black River. It is the second SOS Village built in Mauritius and comprises the standard facilities, namely family houses, a kindergarten, a hall and a volley ball/basket-ball pitch. The construction of SOS Children’s Village Bambous started in 2002 and was completed in 2003.
In November 2003, the first children were welcomed in the village and the first family house was then opened to accommodate them. In May 2005, the Village was officially inaugurated jointly by Mr. Raouf Bundhun G.O.S.K., former Vice President of the Republic of Mauritius, and Mr. Helmut Kutin, the President of SOS-Kinderdorf International. On the occasion of that historical event, Mr. Aristide Ramacciotti, Continental Director, and the then Regional Director, Mr. Rainer Kruger, were also present. A memorable show was performed by kids from SOS CV Bambous and Beau Bassin.
Actually, the Village provides residential care for some 51 children. The youngest child is two years old and the eldest is aged 16. The Kindergarten of SOS Children’s Village Bambous accommodates some 75 kids.
Only seven out of the 12 Family Houses are used as children village facilities.
The other Family Houses are used as a Youth Facility for boys.
Show time in the village of Bambous Besides the standard facilities, the other important programmes of the village are the Vocational Education and Training (VET), and the outreach Family Strengthening Programme for the prevention of child abandonment which operates in two locations, namely in Cité Mangalkhan and Bambous.
Since the VET programme started in September 2005, 42 trainees have followed courses in electricity, woodwork, plumbing, pastry and painting.
